The Kansas women’s basketball team has earned a key transfer commitment as it works on building a new-look roster for the 2024-25 season.
Sania Copeland, a 5-foot-7 transfer guard from Wisconsin, announced on Instagram Monday afternoon that she will join KU next season and wrote that she is “home for good.”
Copeland is from Kansas City, Kansas, and played at Olathe North High School, making her the latest transfer with a regional connection reeled in by head coach Brandon Schneider and his staff. Last year, for example, KU signed Alabama transfer Ryan Cobbins, who is also from Kansas City.
Copeland gives KU another key piece at guard around returning starters S’Mya Nichols and Wyvette Mayberry. She has previously played with Nichols at the youth level, including for KC Prodigy at the Jr. NBA World Championship.
Copeland played two seasons at Wisconsin and as a sophomore averaged 7.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game, most notably matching her career high with 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament against Illinois State on March 28. She left the Badgers’ last game of the season, a matchup with the eventual WNIT champion Saint Louis, due to injury.
One area she was not as efficient on the season was as a 3-point shooter; while she led Wisconsin with 43 made 3s, she did so on 151 attempts, meaning she shot just 28.5%.
As it happens, KU won last year’s WNIT. That was sandwiched in between a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances that ended in the second round, with the Jayhawks most recently losing to USC in Los Angeles last month and saying goodbye to their experienced core of three super-senior starters.
Among KU’s new additions, Copeland now joins a trio of freshmen in Zoe Canfield, Carla Osma and Regan Williams, as the Jayhawks still have plenty of scholarships left to fill.
