Kansas tennis rips Sooners

Kansas University picked up its fourth straight Big 12 tennis victory Friday, a 4-1 rout of Oklahoma at Jayhawk Tennis Center.

Janet Koch (No. 3), Nina Khmelnitckaia (No. 4) and Maria Jose Cardona (No. 5) earned two-set singles victories, and the doubles teams Cardona-Summer Collins and Smith Hinton-Anastasiya Rychagova won to lead the Jayhawks to their second straight victory over Oklahoma.

“What I love is not that we won. It’s how we won,” Kansas coach Todd Chapman said after the Jayhawks improved to 16-5 overall, 6-2 in the Big 12. “We were aggressive. We took it to them. We were playing to win, so that was key. We’ve been very, very good with the doubles this year. With a young team, that definitely helps us going into singles play and gives us a confidence boost when we secure that doubles point.”

Kansas is ranked No. 33 in the latest ITA rankings.

“This win was huge. There’s a lot to play for and a lot that we’re excited for,” Chapman said. “Today was big for conference standings heading into the tournament next week. This win puts us in a position to hopefully get a seed that we like. We believe we’re in a good spot looking ahead to the NCAA championships.”

KU will host Oklahoma State at noon Sunday at JTC.

The Big 12 starts April 28 in Stillwater, Okla.
